Question : hi doc,
my mom is 55 years old and had a extended portion of mass towards left of chin(dont know exactly wat it is but on touching it feels like a ball of mass) since childhood . it was left untouched as it never used to pain.
now four days back we observed, that area near chin part is hard to touch and is swelled.
we went to see doc next day and doc advised observe it for four days and get some blood test done and then come back to show me.
it is now four days and that part is still swelled and hard and pains when touched with finger.
I have attached pic of that part of chin and blood test reports.
can you please have a look and advise.
thanks XXXXXXX
Brief Answer:
Could be complicated dermoid or lipoma
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for your query.
I have seen the image, it appears to be either a dermoid cyst or a lipoma. Both of them not serious tumors only when not complicated.
Now I see that there is redness which is an indication of inflammation in the tumor which is not a good sign. You may have to act fast, identify the nature of the tumor and if not a malignancy (dangerous cancer) removal would be the best option.
To identify the nature and type of the tumor you may have to get a test called FNAC. FNAC is fine needle aspiration cytology, a medical diagnosis technique wherein a small amount of material from the tumor is taken using a needle and studied under microscope. This helps to identify what type of tumor it is and why there is swelling and redness and also provides ideas on how to treat.
Amongst the blood tests TSH is raised indicates your mother is suffering from thyroid illness called Hypothyroidism. You may have to consult a endocrinologist to treat the same at the earliest. This may not be related to the tumor or its complications.
Hope, I answered your query.
Wish you good health.
