Question: I started to feel bad last night. Achy and small sore throat. Woke up this morning with major congestion. Mucus colored light yellow. No fever this morning but now it has started to rise. Currently 101.1. I took a 500 mg Tylenol a half hour ago and it seems to have no effect. When do I start worrying and go to the clinic? I am a 6o yr old female.

Brief Answer:
need another tab of tylenol, dose too low for an adult

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

In most persons, the symptoms are due a viral infection.

Symptoms usually reach their peak by day 2 to 3 and last 1 to 2 weeks. A cough would be expected to develop within the next 24 to 36 hours, this is the normal course for the common cold.
In some persons the symptoms can be severe and require medical care, in many, over the counter meds are enough along with fluids and rest.

You may want to consider using another tablet of the tylenol, the dose for adults is 2 tabs (1 g), 500mg is not enough for an adult to help with aches and fever. Two tabs can be taken every 6 hours.
Ibuprofen can also help with aches and fever and can be used along with tylenol.

A topical and/or oral decongestant can be used to help with the congestion. A topical decongestant - normal saline or otrivine
Oral decongestant- sudafed

You would worry if the fever extends beyond 3 to 4 days or if you develop a severe persistent cough.

I hope this helps, hope you feel better soon
