Which One Of Latuda And Risperdal Has Good Effect On Schizophrenia?

default
Posted on Wed, 2 Apr 2014
Question: My 21 yr old son is taking Latuda for schizophrenia. He was on Risperdal for about 1.5 yrs prior. He started Latuda in XXXXXXX - half Latuda, half Risperdal. Once he weaned off Risperdal, he became nauseous, sometimes to the point of vomiting. Initially, things appeared to improve. He has rigid thinking and will not deviate from the Latuda. Dr. has recommended reducing it to 40 mg for a while (he is at 80) but he won't. Is this a normal side effect? He has lost about 12 pounds (he is normal weight) and has become ornery and we noticed his focus is waning. I'm thinking this is because he thows up the medicine about 2-3 a week. I guess my question is, how long should he try this drug until we move on to something else.

Brief Answer: At least 6 to 8 weeks should wait Detailed Answer: HI Thanks for using healthcare magic. I, Dr XXXXXXX Kapoor, would help you in this query. Latuda is a atypical antipsychotic and has good effect on schizophrenia, but not better than Risperdal. In your son case, nausea and vomiting is side effect of latuda, so better to decrease its dose up to 40mg. You did not mention the exact dose of risperdal and his response over it. If he was getting better response with risperdal, than carry on with same drug. That would help in controlling his illness. In schizophrenia, duration of medications depend upon the response. Normally, psychiatrists keep patients on same drug for 6 to 8 weeks before shift to another. If in his case, after 8 weeks of treatment with latuda, he is not getting any response, then you can think about other options. If he had good response with risperdal, then i would suggest for it rather to shift to another drug. In case, you need further help, you can ask. Regards Dr. XXXXXXX Kapoor Psychiatrist
