I'm familiar with ldl, hdl reduction but not sure which would ultimately prevent cardiovascular events? The literature is confusing. Thanks!

Hello!
Welcome to Ask a Doctor service!
I understand your concern and would explain that both atorvastatin and rosuvastatin are safe to use and both effective in the prevention of cardiovascular events.
There is no difference between them in the prevention of future cardiovascular events.
For this reason, I would recommend taking daily 10mg of Rosuvastatin or 20-40mg of Atorvastatin.
Hope to have been helpful to you!
Kind regards,
Dr.Ilir Sharka,
Cardiologist

I’ve read that atorvastatin has had better clinical results i.e. fewer cardiovascular events vs Rosuvastatin. So you don’t think there’s an advantage with atorvastatin? My edge has been about 80 and I’ve read there might be an advantage for kidney protection as well. Also am under the impression that atorvastatin might be advantageous for stroke protection since it’s hydrophilic. I did seem to have some minor cognitive issues when I tried atorvastatin. Thank you!

Detailed Answer:
Hello again!
You are right about Atorvastatin and Rosuvastatin benefits, as well as it is necessary to look after the safety profile of each of them.
Almost all statins may potentially lead to mild cognitive impaiment when used for prolonged periods.
Anyway, it would be wise to try first diet profile modulation before switching to drugs, ar least for a couple of months.
Wishing you good health!
Let me know in case of any further questions!

Detailed Answer:
Hello again!
Yes, I have read this article, and it is true that it concludes about atorvastatin and fluvastatin as more powerful in the prevention of coronary events.
Anyway, this is a single study and further randomized studies are needed to come into a conclusion. You should know that medical literature is usually based on medical reviews of many studies, which come into similar conclusions.
In our daily practice we use atorvastatin and rosuvastatin very frequently, with high efficacy. But, usually the decision is made on the patients tolerance.
So, in your case, I would suggest starting atorvastatin 20mg daily and see if you tolerate it well (without adverse effects).
Hope to have been helpful to you!
