Which Vitamins Should Be Avoided While Taking Amlodipine?

Question: What vitamins and other supplements should I avoid while taking amlodipine and what might be the side effects from any reaction?
Brief Answer:
there is no interaction with vitamins
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
There's no interaction that I know between vitamins and amlodipine. If you'd like to ask.about a specific supplement, please do so, because I can't search about every supplement that one may take. Most supplements do not interact with amlodipine either.
Kind regards!

Not even vitamin k? Also, calcium - since amlodipine is a calcium channel blocker does it make sense to take calcium supplement?
Brief Answer:
no interaction with vitamin k
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for being more specific!
Vitamin k won't interact with amlodipine.
Amlodipine may have a lower effect on blood pressure when administered with calcium but this interaction is not very important usually. There is no reason to take calcium because of amlodipine. But if you do take it for any other reason then keep in mind that stopping it might increase the effect of amlodipine on blood pressure.
Kind regards!

Thankyou for the previous answers. One further question about amlodipine. I've been taking 2.5 mg nightly. Prior to that I had also been taking lisinopril 10 mg for 5 years as prescribed by my cardiologist. I developed a cough which effected my voice. My GP said it was a common side effect of lisinopril and instructed me to stop it and proceed with losartan 50 mg and amlodipine, a combination which I could not tolerate. He then told me to cut losartan to 25 mg; still could not tolerate it. He said to discontinue losartan and stay with amlodipine 2.5 mg. After a week of this I felt I was under dosed and the doctor said to double it. That feels too strong. I see that amlodipine only comes in 2.5, 5, and 10 mg doses. Is it OK cut it in half and try proceedingf with 2.5 at night and 1.25 in the morning?
Brief Answer:
it's OK but I would suggest something else
Detailed Answer:
You're welcome.
Two drugs are usually more potent than a single drug at a higher dose. So if you're having trouble with the antihypertensive effect of your current regimen, I would suggest continuing with a single drug at a higher dose or perhaps divided in two doses (morning-evening). For example amlodipine 5mg twice daily or amlodipine 10mg once per day. The same applies for losartan. You can use up to 100mg of losartan per day either once per day (100mg) or twice per day (50mg).
The target blood pressure is between 130-140mmHg for the systolic and less than 90mmHg for the diastolic blood pressure. Modifying other factors like salt intake, body weight, physical activity and diet is also essential for the success of any treatment regimen.
Contact me again, if you have any more questions or you need me to clarify anything.
Kind Regards!

Thanks for your reply. However, I'm still unclear about whether I should cut one 2.5 mg amlodipine in two and take 2.5 at night and the 1.25 half in the morning. Or, are you advising me not to do that and take the full 2.5 mg day and night, which seemed too much before. Losartan is out of the picture.
Brief Answer:
you've got to check if the specific pill can be halved
Detailed Answer:
I was a little confused about your regimen and thought that you took both amlodipine AND losartan. But since you're taking amlodipine only, if 2.5mg are not enough and 5mg are too much then you can try your suggestion. Please read the summary of product characteristics to find out if the specific pill can be halved. Some pills are not supposed to be halved.
I admit that I find it a little strange that 2,5mg is not enough but 5mg is too much. No antihypertensive drug has this high potency when it's dose is doubled. Perhaps you should talk with your doctor about the 24 hour (Holter) measurement of the blood pressure which will detect high or low readings and how often they occur. If 5mg of amlodipine is too much for you then perhaps you can do without it at all!
And finally please remember that hypertension is not all about drugs. The other factors that I've mentioned in my previous answer are very important (diet, body weight, salt intake, etc).
I hope it's clear!
