Brief Answer:
It is very likely due to irritation caused by dryness.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I have gone through your query and here is my opinion.

The irritation in your eyes is very likely due to dryness and local irritants.
Is it also accompanied by redness and watering?

I would advise you to restrict rubbing of them.
Do wash them gently with tap water.
Apply cool compress.
Give rest to the eyes.
You can also put over the counter antihistamine drops four times a day.
Take NSAIDs like Paracetamol and Ibuprofen if their is associated pain.

If the symptoms do not improve, please visit your ophthalmologist for clinical examination and to rule out a foreign body.
He would evaluate and manage accordingly.

Hope that I have answered your query.

Stay healthy and stay blessed.
Regards.
