Question : Hi, doctor. Just a quick question. The TN2 with the gums burning has really been acting up and just want to get your opinion on which of these two would be most effective for this. Lyrica or Neurontin? I know the two are close in makeup but just wondering if u have found one to work better for all these TN2 symptoms. Thanks so much.

Brief Answer:
In my opinion, Lyrica should work better.

Detailed Answer:
Hello again and thanks for the direct question.

I have read your new question.

In my opinion, Lyrica should work better than Neurontin in the case of TN symptoms.

Possible adverse effects also are found to be milder.

I hope this helps.

Feel free to ask if you have further questions.

Take care.

Thank u for your answer. Since I have both the TN2 and AO on the right side (variable) symptoms and obviously cannot take both meds at same time, would Lyrica also be advised for the AO?

Doctor, prior to your answer to this follow up, the reason I ask is my family doctor suggested I ask. You are exactly correct about Lyrica being the better of the two for TN2 since those symptoms subside with the Lyrica. He wanted me to ask u if Lyrica would be as effective with the AO - where there is no burning - just that constant pulling dull ache. For that, he is unsure whether the Neurontin or Lyrica would be most effective. Thank u again for your help.

Brief Answer:
I would explain as follows.

Detailed Answer:
Hello again.

I have read your follow-up question.

In my opinion, you should use only pregabalin initially.

It is very likely for pregabalin to control symptoms linked to both conditions.

Later, for the dull ache, an antiinflammatory drug may be added.

Hoep this helps.

Feel free to ask if you have further questions.

Thank u, doctor, for the excellent advice. Will follow it but the TN2 symptoms are really fired up. Last question - have u found botox to be effective to alleviate TN2 symptoms - esp. with the burning and pain in the gums and teeth?

Brief Answer:
I would explain as follows.

Detailed Answer:
Hello again.

I have read your follow-up question.

Botox injections for atypical trigeminal neuralgia aim to lessen the perception of pain.

In a number of patients, if done correctly, these injections are found to be very effective.

Hope this helps.

Feel free to ask if you have further questions.

In good health.
