Question: I’m a healthy 68 year old female in good health and weight. I had an ekg. All good. I take ambien Lipitor and Wellbutrin as meds I recently have been experiencing a strange no pain pulsation under my left rib cage. It comes and goes. Should I be concerned. I drink 3 cups coffee and glass of wine at night. Any thoughts as to what causes this?

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

Regarding your concern, I would explain that your symptoms could be related to caffeine or alcohol intake.

Anxiety can also trigger this clinical scenario.

Anyway, I would recommend performing some tests to exclude other possible causes that may mimic this clinical scenario :

- a cardiac ultrasound and a resting ECG
- an ambulatory 24 to 48 hours ECG monitoring to investigate for possible cardiac arrhythmia
- complete blood count for anemia
- thyroid hormone levels for thyroid gland dysfunction
- blood electrolytes for possible imbalance.

You should discuss with your doctor on the above tests.

In the meantime, I would recommend reducing coffee and wine intake.

Hope to have been helpful!

Kind regards,

I forgot to mention just saw my cardio before symptoms. Took ekg. All good. Also I suffer from constipation. Started taking fiber in my water. And stool softener. I moved my bowels this morning. Can it be gas or back up in colon?

Hello again!

You are right about gas, as it can trigger all this clinical situation, but caffeine intake too.

As you have no shortness of breath or lightheadedness during these episodes, there is nothing to worry about.

Anyway, I would recommend checking at least your thyroid hormone levels in order to exclude a possible thyroid gland dysfunction.

Hope you will find this answer helpful!

Wishing good health,

I moved my bowels good this AM. and today I’m not feeling any more pulsation so I’m sure it was gas and or back up.
Thanks
