Why Am I Unable To Swallow While Lying Down Without Telling Choked After Getting Treated For Throat Infection?

Posted on Wed, 30 Sep 2020
Question: I'm having trouble sleeping because when I lie down my throat cannot go through the swallowing
motion and I feel as if I am choking; causing me to waken in a panic. I was treated for an infected
throat that was swollen with amoxicillin and methylpred dosepak and it cured the swelling and infection.
I wonder if I'm having side effects as my ankles are swollen also.

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

I passed carefully through your question and would explain that the difficulty in swallowing are not related to the swollen ankles.

The swollen ankles could be an adverse effect of your therapy (methylprednisolone), as it is known to cause increased fluid retention.

While the difficulty swallowing could be related to the past infection, or a reactivation of the infection.

A lung disorder, can not be excluded either.

Coming to this point, I would recommend consulting with your attending physician for a physical exam and some tests:

- a throat bacterial culture
- a chest X ray study and pulmonary function tests
- complete blood count, PCR, ESR for inflammation.

You should discuss with your doctor on the above tests.

Hope to have been helpful!

Kind regards,

Dr. Iliri

Hello again!

I would recommend sleeping with two pillows to have improve your situation.

A diuretic, like Lasix can help improve your situation too.

Heart failure can mimic all this clinical situation.

For this reason, I recommend performing a cardiac ultrasound and NT-proBNP levels, coupled with the other above mentioned tests.

You should discuss with your doctor on the above issues.

Kind regards!
