Brief Answer:
Most likely due to cervical disc disease.

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

It occurs due to pressure on the nerves.
In my opinion there are some possibilities:

1. Pressure in the nerves at wrist - Called carpal tunnel syndrome- pain is present at night also. You need NCV test to confirm the diagnosis. Treatment is generally surgery.

2. Pressure on the nerves in neck- most common cause due to cervical disc disease. Diagnosis is with x rays and clinical examination. MRI neck may be required. Treatment initially is pain killers, muscle relaxants and physiotherapy.

3. Possibility is : Pressure ion the nerves in arm pit if you keep your arm over back of chair- unlikely in you case.

I suggest you get x rays of neck and start treatment s cervical disc disease. If there is no improvement, then try for other causes.
Thanks. Please feel free to ask any other query.
