Question : I have acute kidney failure and have severe torso itching. I just saw my NP who mentioned something about kidney tocknicity and gave me some lotion (mometasone furoate ointment o.1%) to apply once a day. I find no relief. I'm going crazy. Can you help me?
Brief Answer:
You should check urea levels.
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Itching is one of the effects of renal failure if serum urea level is elevated. Acute kidney failure do not significantly elevated urea levels; however it is worthwhile to get it checked. If elevated, the itching will resolve as the current acute renal toxicity is rectified.
In a nutshell, I think it is important to measure urea levels. Discuss with your doctor. In the meanwhile, you can be started on antihistamine drugs like Zyrtec which are safe in renal failure.
Hope this helps. Let me know if you need clarifications.
