Brief Answer:
peripheral neuropathy, different possible causes

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

Numbness and other abnormal sensations in the body (eg tingling, burning discomfort, sharp intermittent pain etc) are usually due to abnormal function of the nerves, this is called neuropathy.

It can be temporary or permanent and there are different possible causes.

Some of the causes include-(1)diabetes
(2)trauma to the nerves eg arthritis of the bones of the neck can affect the nerves to the hands
(3)low vitamin b12 or folate levels
(4)infection such as shingles
(5)thyroid disease
(6)liver or kidney disease
(7)abnormal vitamin b6 level
(8)side effect of medication
(9)autoimmune diseases such as lupus or RA

If it continues or worsens then you should visit your doctor to determine the cause. This would require physical examination and imaging such as x rays of the neck.

There are medications that can be prescribed by your doctor that would help you eg amitriptyline, tegretol, gabapentin, lyrica

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
