Why Do I Sometimes Feel My Heartbeat Very Strongly Like It Is Pounding At My Throat?

default
Posted on Thu, 13 Jul 2023
Question: I sometimes feel my heartbeat very strongly and I also feel it pulsing in my throat just above my chest.

This happens only when I'm resting. If I'm hiking, golfing, etc., heartbeat is fine.

Brief Answer:
I would recommend as follows.

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

Your symptoms don't seem to be related to any cardiac disorders.

You should know that in thin and tall persons, it is quite normal to feel the heartbeat during resting.

Anyway, considering your past medical history, I would recommend consulting with your attending physician and performing some tests to investigate for other possible causes:

- A cardiac ultrasound
- A resting ECG
- Thyroid hormone levels for thyroid dysfunction
- Complete blood count for anemia
- Blood electrolytes for possible imbalances

You should discuss with your doctor on the above tests.

Hope you will find this answer helpful! Wishing you good health.

Regards,
Dr. Iliri

Thank you for your prompt reply. In Feb I had both a cardiac ultrasound and ECG in prep for the cardiac ablation. My cardiologist told me then that other than the fluttering, my heart was sound. I will try to contact a GP here (I'm 850 miles away from home and will be here until December) to follow up.

Brief Answer:
My answer is as follows.

Detailed Answer:

Hello again,

Considering the fact that it is more than 6 months since your last performed cardiac tests, I would recommend repeating those tests, coupled with the other blood lab tests as recommended above

Hope you will find this answer helpful! Wishing you good health.
