Brief Answer: Hypertensive neuropathy Detailed Answer: Hello XXXX, Thanks for your query. Given the history that you had high blood pressure & off medications for 02 years, the sensation of cold & numbness felt in your toes can be attributed to Hypertensive neuropathy (damage to nerves secondary to high blood pressure). Fresh estimation of blood pressure levels will be helpful in clinching the diagnosis. Under such circumstances, the mainstay of the treatment will be to control the high blood pressure & bring it to normal levels. Kindly visit your Doctor/ Cardiologist for the same. Other reasons for the symptoms can be: 1. Entrapment of nerve fibers or blood vessels at the Lumbosacral region or lower limbs. 2. Inadequate hydration status & electrolyte imbalance of the body, OR 3. Dietary deficiencies of certain nutrients like Iron, Calcium, Vitamin D, Vitamin B 12, Folic acid, etc. which help in blood formation & nerve conduction. Symptomatic relief can be obtained by intake of nervigenic agents (like Vitamin B6, Vitamin B 12, Folic acid) as well as multivitamin & multimineral supplements including iron, calcium & Vitamin D needs to be added in your diet. Physiotherapy & postural exercise will also be helpful. If symptoms still persist, kindly consult a Neurologist & get a complete Neurological examination done. Certain investigations like complete blood count, serum electrolyte estimation, fresh estimation of blood sugar levels, lipid profile, thyroid profile, Doppler study of lower limbs & nerve conduction studies will be helpful to rule out any pathological cause for the symptoms. Wishing you a Good Health. Please let me know if I need to clarify further. Take care.

Thanks. I've also heard diabetes can cause similar symptoms. Is this true? What are other signs to look for for diabetes?

Brief Answer: Kindly view the details Detailed Answer: Hello XXXX, Thanks for your follow up query. You are correct regarding the fact that similar symptoms can be caused by diabetes (known as Diabetic neuropathy). Keeping this in mind, I had advised you (in my previous answer) to undergo investigation for estimation of blood sugar levels. The signs of diabetes you can look for are- increased frequency of urination, increased thirst, increased sensation of hunger, loss of weight, blurring of vision, delayed wound healing, tiredness or easy fatiguability, etc. So, if you notice any such symptoms, it will be better to seek a medical help. Hope I have been able to clarify your doubts. Please let me know if you have any further questions. Take care.
