Question: Hi my baby is 6month 14 days old..when she was 6month old ..she started having frequent motions of small small quantities. After 2 days it changed to watery and green in colour. We consulted doc and he gave probiotics.we continued for 3 days but no improvement. Again after 3 4 days we consulted another doc. He directly gave cefixime. We continued for 5 days and texture improved and frequency decreased but today us 5th day of antibiotic but frequency seems to be increased..till now 5times. However consistency is thick but dark greenish colour. Pls suggest what to do.is it serious issue??also when baby does potty she bites her gum like freak once potty done she becomes normal. Also no vomitting.. no fussy..active baby.pls suggest

Brief Answer:
It is normal. Not a cause for concern.

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

I have gone through your query and understand your concerns. For a baby of this age, it is normal to pass stool several times a day or even after each feed. Alternatively the child may pass stool once in 10 days and that is normal too. Unless the stool is hard and pellet like, you need not grow concerned. It is also normal to pass green stool or a combination of yellow stool. The green colour occurs due to rapid transit through large intestine where the bile pigments do not get adequate time to convert to the yellow colour of stool. It is OK for some mucus to be there in the stool. I would not be concerned about the 'biting of her gum'.

Since the entire presentation is normal, there is no 'improvement' to be expected irrespective of what you do. Since it is normal, you need not worry about seriosity. Please complete the course of antibiotic although unless the stool is blood stained, antibiotics are not needed and even if a gastrointestinal infection results, it is self-limiting.

Feel free to write back.

Regards
