Brief Answer:
Different possible causes

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

Numbness is most commonly due to an issue with the nerves in the area, this is called neuropathy.
Neuropathy can be temporary or permanent and there are different possible causes.

Some of the most common causes are:
(1) Trauma to the nerves eg arthritis of the back can affect the nerves that come out from the back to supply the thigh and legs

An x ray of the back can show if there are any changes

(2) Diabetes - uncontrolled diabetes can cause neuropathy, controlling blood sugars can prevent further damage

(3) Liver or kidney disease-this would be detected by blood tests

(4) Low levels of vitamin b12 or folate- again blood tests can determine if this is a problem and replacement therapy can be given

(5) Infection such as shingles

(6) Side effect of medication

(7) Neurological conditions such as MS, stroke

(8) Thyroid disease- thyroid hormone levels would determine if the levels are normal

(9) Autoimmune diseases such as lupus, RA

To find the cause, you may need an x ray of the lower back along with bloods such as diabetes screen, liver and kidney function, complete blood count and ESR (looks for inflammation in the body), thyroid function tests, vitamin levels

There are medications that can help with numbness such as Gabapentin, Tegretol, Lyrica, Amitriptyline.
These meds have different uses but are effective for neuropathy as well.

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions.
