Why Doesn't My Infant Sleep On Her Back?

Posted on Fri, 1 Mar 2024
Question: Dear Doc
My baby-Girl is now 6 months old. We have two issues to take advice on.

1. )) When she is made to sleep , she turns on one side and sleeps. Either right or left side. She is very hesitant to sleep on her back now. We fear of SIDS , and that babies should always be made to sleep on their back. But she just wont sleep. Is it safe for her sleep on her sides.

2. )) Also at night she is very hesitant to sleep on the bed. She always wants to sleep on her mothers lap , or my lap or her grandmothers lap. But as soon as she is put on bed , she wakes up and cries loudly . Pls advice.

Regards XXXXXXX (Dad)

Brief Answer:
Let her sleep comfortably in her natural position

Detailed Answer:
Hi....You need not worry about the SIDS in this age group as should have grown and and developed by now so that if there is any problem in her breathing she would correct herself by Rolling over.

So do not worry about the sudden infant death syndrome at this age group.

Regarding the problem of sleeping in the lap of one of the caregiver - she has to be gradually made to accustom to sleep on the mattress
As age progresses this is going to be a problem so it is the right time for you to gradually make her accustomed to sleep on the mattress, but one of you can be beside her initially.

You cannot expect this habit to go away suddenly but it will go away in a period of few weeks to months as you start it now.

Thanks Doctor.
One more query. My baby is normally quite a peaceful child. He has no hassles all though the day. Only during sleeping in the night, she cries loudly before she falls asleep. Is there any reason for the same.

Brief Answer:
Suggestions on sleeping pattern

Detailed Answer:
Hi... absolutely no. This crying just before sleeping is a very common phenomena and is physiological in this age group and you should bear with it till at least one and half to two years of age.

Very similar to this, some kids tend to cry immediately after getting up also and even this is normal and physiological till 2 years of age please.

I wish your kid a bright future. If you need any future medical consultation and suggestions, I will be glad to help. You can approach me at the following link.
