Posted on Wed, 8 Feb 2017
Question: I have been shedding hair more than usual. My dermatologist gave me some kind a steriod shot and wanted me to use fluocinonide 0.05 solution to use plus told me to get 3000mcg of biotin. The only problem i saw was my hair shedding. What is the purpose of the gel. What is it suppose to do?He didn't tell me that i had any kind of skin condition.

Brief Answer:
It is an antiinflammatory agent

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone through your query and understand your concerns. Let me remark that it is normal for about 100 hairs to fall daily and that does not constitute increased shedding of hair. Moreover in winter it may appear as though the hair fall is increased even though it is actually normal and that does not call for additional measures.

Fluocinonide is a potent glucocorticoid used topically as an anti-inflammatory agent that is given to suppress possible inflammation of your hair follicles which might be the cause of your hairfall. I doubt if that is the case. In any case, I would not recommend using it for more than week if you choose to use it. Rather I would recommend applying Ketoconazole shampoo (available in brands like Nizoral) twice or thrice a week as fungal infection can lead to increased hair fall.

Biotin is a vitamin whose deficiency can lead to hairfall. However, in case you do not have a deficiency, taking biotin will not help.

Let me know if I could help further.

I have been going through anxiety and depression but have improved. I just want to know if my hair will grow back normally? My dermatologist had my blood tested. What would he be looking for doctor?

Questions answered one by one.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back and for the updates.

I would insist you not to panic. Anxiety will not help the situation. As of now, I would rather prefer to think one step at a time. Apply ketoconazole shampoo and see if things normalize in a couple of weeks.

It is hard to speculate what your doctor had been looking for. It could be for presence of antibodies for something. Hard to comment without a thorough clinical evaluation. However, you can feel free to upload the reports once you get them and I would guide you accordingly.
