Question: Hi Doctor,
My sisteris diagnosed with pcod/pcos and she is advised to take glycomet500mg,twice a day before her meal and1 time after that. She is married and their couple is planning for kids soon. She also had irregular periods. She went through some scans and tests and the doctors precribed glycomet toher, many of my friends and me also have a same problem and they say glycomet shouldnot be used as it Is a contraceptive... Is glycomet a safe tablet to be used since my sister is planning for kids ?Is it a contraceptive tablet?!. I have no awareness on how this tablet works. She is taking the medication since over 6 months. Please advise if glycomet can be continued

Brief Answer:
Glycomet not a contraceptive

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear,
I have gone through your question and understand your concerns.
Polycystic ovarian syndrome is a condition in which the hormonal disturbances are there.
The insulin hormone do not work properly leading to irregular ovulation or no ovulation, irregular periods and cyst in ovaries.
Glycomet is metformin which is given to improve the insulin action and hence improve the hormonal profile in PCOS patients.
It is not a contraceptive at all.
One should continue while trying to conceive, as it improves fertility in PCOS patients.
It is safe in pregnancy also.
Hope you found the answer helpful.
