Question : Why is high blood pressure medication given to patient when they do not have high blood pressure. I had a heart valve surgery Dec. 2010 and the doctors put me on Metoprolol 25 mg. 1 a day and Amlodipine 5 mg 2 a day. I Quit taking the pill for cholesterol as I never ever had a problem with that.

I have gone through your query. Metaprolol is usually given in conditions like yours to prevent cardiac dysrhythmias. Amlodipine is most probably given for controlling your Blood pressure to a lower level which is suitable for your heart function.

What is your Blood pressure reading after taking the medication?

Also cholesterol medications like statin is given life long for cardiac risk patients even their cholesterol in normal level. You have gone through valvular surgery, which is also in risk group for thrombotic complications. Statins and Aspirin combination decreases complications like heart attack or stroke.

So all these medications should be continued. If you have a low Blood pressure while taking these medications or any clinical symptoms like dizziness or head ache then you can approach your physician for changing the hypertension medication amlodipine or decrease the dosage.
