Posted on Thu, 30 Oct 2014
Question: MY WIFE IS 7 WEEK'S PREGNANT. SHE HAS ALSO ADENOID OF PITUITARY DUE TO HIGH PROLACTIN LEVEL AND SHE WAS ON A MEDICINE NAMED CABERGOLIN (CABERLIN) TILL WE CAME TO KNOW THAT SHE IS PREGNANT. NOW CABERLIN HAS BEEN STOPPED. AFTER AN ULTRASONOGRAPHY DURING 5TH WEEK OF PREGNANCY, HER GYNAE ADVISED HER THREE MEDICINES 1) PUREGEST 400 SOFTGELS TO BE INSERTED VAGINALLY, 2) FERTIGYN 5000 IU, TO BE ADMINISTERED ONCE EVERY WEEK, AND 3) A FOLIC ACID TABLET. HEART BEAT OF THE FOETUS WAS FOUND IN 6TH WEEK OF PREGNANCY. WANTED TO KNOW THE PURPOSE FOR WHICH PUREGEST AND FERTIGYN ARE USED. ARE THESE MEDICINES SAFE FOR A PREGNANT LADY AND HER CHILD ? AND WILL SHE HAVE ANY PROBLEM FOR ADENOID IN PITUITARY DURING PREGNANCY ?SHE IS ALSO TAKING ELTROXIN 50 DAILY AS SHE HAS LITTLE HIGH TSH LEVEL.

Brief Answer:
MEDICINES ARE SAFE, ADENOMA WOULD BE STABLE MOSTLY

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXX
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
To answer your queries -
1. Puregest softgels contain progesterone, this is a hormone which supports the growing pregnancy, and is safe for the baby.
2. Fertigyn injections contain HCG - again a hormone which is critical for the development of the baby inside the uterus.
Both the medicines are quite safe for a pregnant lady and are only given to promote the well being of the child.
SO please dont worry.
Fertigyn injections can be taken until the 12th - 14th week of pregnancy, and Puregest can be continued beyond that too.
I think what you meant is pituitary adenoma, not ' adenoid '.
Pituitary adenoma can remain stable during pregnancy, at times, it might increase in size.
There is no cause for concern , however, as in most of the cases, it can be managed with drug therapy in the form of Cabergolin / Bromcriptine.
Only very rarely is surgery indicated if the growth is massive.
SO please dont worry, she should be regularly followed up by her Endocrinologist for the pituitary adenoma.
All the best

SHE IS 'NOT' TAKING ANY MEDICINE FOR ADENOMA RIGHT NOW... CABERLIN HAS BEEN STOPPED BY HER GYNAE. IS IT GOING TO HARM HER...? MOREOVER, SHE IS UNDER TREATMENT OF A GYNAE ONLY, SHOULD WE CONSULT AN ENDOCRINOLOGIST ALSO ?

Brief Answer:
YES, SEE AN ENDOCRINOLOGIST.

Detailed Answer:
Caberlin must have been stopped , as prolactin levels must have been fine.
Yes, definitely you must consult an Endocrinologist in addition to a gynecologist.
Take care.
