Why Is Routine Testicular Ultrasound Prescribed For?

default
Posted on Wed, 28 Jan 2015
Question: Hi,

I just had a routine testicular ultrasound and everything was fine with normal looking testicles. The Dr routinely ordered a Testosterone and SHBG blood work (waiting for results).

Questions - What are these tests generally done for? And if the ultrasound was normal and my testicles are fine I'm guessing that even if high testosterone level results came back it wouldn't be because of a testicular lump/cancer since the ultrasound was fine (I understand that high level can be caused by this)?

Thx

Brief Answer:
Thse tests are done to determine the androgen levels in blood.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for your query, based on the facts that you have posted it appears that you have normal testicles detected on Ultrasound Scanning however your Dr has asked for blood test to know Testosterone and Sex Hormone Bind Globulin.(SHBG)

I shall be happy if you can post me few more details to help me in making comments on your problem.
1) Do you have reduced sex drive ?
2)Are you facing problem of Erectile Dysfunction .

Normally these tests are done to find out the level of these hormones when one ids being investigated for ED or reduced sex drive .

Though your testicles are normal in anatomy and size it does not indicate the functions of the testicles especially the secretions of these hormones .

Hope I have answered your query ,please feel free to ask if you have more questions , I shall be happy to help you
Thanks and Regards.

Thx for your reply.

No, it just seemed to be routine blood work. I don't have reduced sex drive or ED. So when you say the functions of the testicles you are not referring to cancer (as the testicles are fine in the ultrasound), but just the job they do as in what they produce etc (if that makes sense)?

Brief Answer:
Your ultrsound report does not indicate presence of Cancer.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for follow up .Your Ultrasound Scanning does not reveal any abnormality in architecture of testicles hence there is no question of having cancer of the testicles
More over enlargement of testicle is a first presenting symptom od cancer oof the testis.I do not think any rationale behind doing Testosterone or HSBG
Thanks and Regards.
