Brief Answer:
Can be due to frozen shoulder or capsulitis.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing to us.
Pain in the shoulder and arm specially when raising hand above the head or taking it back can be related to frozen shoulder or capsulitis or tendonitis. The exact cause can be determined after an MRI scan of the shoulder. Any injury in the shoulder area or overstretching can also cause this problem. Usually after confirmation of diagnosis, oral pain killers and muscle relaxants help in decreasing the pain and proper physiotherapy exercises are started after the pain is relieved to restore the movement in the shoulder joint. Do consult an orthopedician for proper investigations and prescription medicines for relief.
