Question : Random shooting pain in my lower side back just above my hip bone. Seems to come and go regardless of body position. Planning on making an appointment with a primary care doctor but don't want to wait too long if it could be emergent.

Brief Answer:
Most likely not an emergency

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
From what you describe, it does not sound like an emergency, but just to be sure I would like to ask some further questions. Is the pain on both sides, or just one side? How long has this been going on? How often does it come, and how long does it usually last when it does come? Where does the pain shoot to?

Basically, as long as you are not having any neurological changes (leg weakness, or unable to control your bladder or bowel function), no fevers or urinary symptoms (pain when you urinate), it does not sound like anything that could be dangerous, and most likely something musculoskeletal, for which you could wait for your appointment. But please let me know if you can tell me more about it and we can discuss it further from there.
Thanks.
