Will Co-Codamol Or Ibuprofen Help Better To Treat Acute Ear Pain?

Posted on Fri, 25 Nov 2016
Question: Hey dr,

I have really bad ear pain in my right ear from an infection. Would Paracemtol/codeine be better or ibuprofen instead in terms of whats more efficient? It kind of feels like an inner ear infection as well and I have suffered in the past from them.

Kind Regards,
XXXX

Brief Answer:
Paracetamol will be helpful..

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXXX welcome back to HCM,
I've gone through your query and understand your concern,

Yes, for the acute pain you can take the Paracetamol/codeine (500/8)mg i.e. Co-codamol etc. twice to thrice daily after food for next 2-3 days, this should provide relief from the acute episode..

However, since you've mentioned the past history of inner ear infection, and feels the same way too, then it'll be worthwhile to visit your doctor or ENT specialist for a quick otscopic examination of the ears under direct vision and if any infection found, then appropriate antiobiotic thrapy for proper cure(as you must be aware of that painkillers and analgesics can only provide short term benefit from the pain, but the infection has to be taken care of by appropriate antibiotic therapy)..

Meanwhile take steam inhaltion three times daily for the timebeing, it'll provide some relief..

Wish you a good health
