default
Posted on Wed, 4 Mar 2015
Question: Dear Doctor,
I am 58 and have been swimming for the past 2 years. My BMI is 24.12. blood pressure 125/80. I would like to know if it is harmful or beneficial for me to do workout in the gym? I do dumbbell lift 3 times a week, each time 45 minutes.I heard someone say that old man like me, should avoid such kind of sports as it can hurt me instead of building me up. A cardiovascular doctor told me, "do not lift heavy stuff" as it might cause heart problem.

Can you please let me know the type of strength or muscle exercise I should do at this age?

Your advice is highly appreciated

Brief Answer:
Yes gym exercises may be harmful for your age as they put pressure on heart

Detailed Answer:
Hello

I have studied your case,

Yes gym exercises may be harmful for your age as they put pressure on heart and blood vessels.

You should do exercises like walking, jogging, joint stetches, yoga.

At least 30 min of moderate-intensity aerobic activity such as cycling or fast walking daily, and
muscle-strengthening activities on 2 or more days a week that work all major muscle groups (legs, hips, back, abdomen, chest, shoulders and arms).
For muscle strengthening you can due static and stretches exercises instead of dumbbell.

Many persons get benefit by yoga pranayama and XXXXXXX XXXXXXX so you can also due that.
