Brief Answer:
Too late for pill; still time for IUD

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

Taking an emergency contraceptive hormone pill should be done within the first 72 hours and the sooner in that time period the better. So yes, 5 days after unprotected intercourse is too late for taking a pill. But The copper T IUD (intrauterine device) can be inserted up to 5 days after and provides excellent protection. So if you can get to a clinic that does that within 5 days of the unprotected intercourse, it should do the job well.

So if i go to my OBGYN ?

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

Yes, your doctor can do this, but it needs to be done within 5 days at the very latest (from the date of intercourse). And when making the appointment, let the receptionist know the situation and time frame, so they can get you in for an appointment quickly. It's also important to let the receptionist know what it is for so the nurse will prepare for the doctor to do an IUD insertion.

I don't know where you live, but if you live in the US, and can't get in to see your OBGYN quickly, then you can go to a Planned Parenthood or women's clinic for this.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Brief Answer:

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

It can be uncomfortable but the insertion is quick. Usually, some cramping when it's put in. But then it should be ok. If the person doing the insertion has experienced it shouldn't be too uncomfortable. Once it's inserted, it can be left in for future contraception.

Ok thanks... implant want work
doctor
Answered by Dr. Bonnie Berger-Durnbaugh (8 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
One other option

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

The implant such as Implanon won't work well as an emergency contraceptive. The one other option at 5 days is to take the pill called XXXXXXX. It's only by prescription so it requires you to get it from your doctor. It cannot be taken after 5 days (it won't work well after 5 days). You might be able to get the prescription from your doctor without having to see him or her but call right away to find out.

Hope I have answered your query.
