Would Penicillin-VK Cause Neuromuscular Issues When Taken For Oral Infection?

default
Posted on Fri, 10 Feb 2017
Question: I've been prescribed pencillin vk to be taken twice a day for 30 days for a bad oral infection with tooth decay, pain in the roof of the mouth, jaw and cheek bones. In 2012 I was given injections in the muscle of bicillin and started experiencing muscle twitching or fasciculation as I believe it's called. I looked online and felt my symptoms were a textbook match for Myasthenia Gravis. At first the twitching was severe then improved over time. Tonic water (quinine) seemed to help and vitamin e. I have seen a couple of doctors regarding this issue, one at Mayo clinic and one more recently. Mayo could not find any real cause of the twitching. And the current doctor who prescribed the Penicillin doesn't seem to be concerned either despite the fact that I'm still experiencing muscle fasciculation especially if I exert the muscles through exercise. I have had numbness in my hands and feet and some rashes that come and go, sores in my scalp, red fluid filled bumps on face and chest, mild itchy rashes on the bottom of my feet. I have had several tick bites over the last several years too one with the classic bullseye reaction. Seems my muscles are gradually getting weaker too... I've had a nagging persistent cough, and trouble catching my breath too. Fatigue is an issue as well. These symptoms have improved over time, but still come and go. I'm flat out scared to take the Pencililn VK given the reaction I had from the bicillin and issues that seem to continue from that. I don't want to exacerbate the muscle twitching or subsequent issues that could stem from that (yes I am concerned about ALS or MS). Am I overreacting... Should I go ahead and take the oral penicillin vk or is it possible that taking this medication could cause further neuromuscular issues? Is there a suitable substitute besides penicillin or clindmyacin which I don't think is the right medication either? Can doxycycline be an effective substitute for oral/tooth/bone infections? My email address is YYYY@YYYY . Sorry for rambling... I thought it might be important to give background along with current nagging symptoms to explain my fears and concerns. Also I am a 53-yr-old male who until I began having these issues was is decent health. Don't smoke, light drinker socially. Not obese, 5'10" 210 lbs, slightly raised cholesterol, have mitral valve prolapse, spleenectomy in '77. Thank you in advance for answering my question(s). I do need to begin antibiotics soon to clear up the infection.

Brief Answer:
Antibiotics-alternative to penicillin

Detailed Answer:
Since you had some reaction (twitching etc) to penicillin (bicillin IM)and history of some atopy (some skin rashes ,vesicles/red fluid filled bumps at times),you should not take any preparation of penicillin (oral, topical, parenteral i.e IM/IV). You should not take oral Penicillin VK (Penicillin V Potassium).
If a person is sensitive to penicillin alternate safe antibiotics would be Azithromycin, even Doxycycline .Azithromycin is effective for treatment of pharyngitis/tonsillitis (common oral infections)caused by Streptococcus pyogenes . Doxycycline is often used for tooth/gum infections especially in Periodontitis,as adjunct treatment to scaling and root planing to promote attachment level gain and reduce pocket depth.
