Would Post-exposure Prophylaxis Be Ineffective When Multivitamins Are Taken About An Hour Later?

Question: Hello, Over two weeks ago I had (vaginal) sex with a female prostitute of unknown medical history. The condom broke. I received PEP from a doctor next day (13h after). which I was regularly taking. Truvada and tivicay. The issue is I did not know that multivitamins should not be taken with them. I never took all of them together but I took them close to each other. 1h difference. Should I still take the pep? I am afraid results might be already compromised.

Brief Answer:
Not to worry. Your regimen will be effective.

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

Till few years back, we were using only two drugs (Trivada) only as PEP. Only recently the regimen changed to three drugs. With two drugs itself most of the infections got aborted. The addition of another drug is to make it potent. Taking these drugs a little apart will not alter its efficacy as it is being continued for 4 weeks, the therapeutic concentration will be available inside the body continuously.

Addition of multivitamins is a supportive measure and to avert certain side effects. Actually, guidelines do not recommend the use of multivitamins. It is the pen habit of certain physicians.

You had started the PEP 13 hours after the exposure. Your regimen will be 100% effective. Therefore, there is nothing to worry.

Hope I have answered your query.

Thank you.
