Question: Anabuse worked for me years ago and I’d like to start taking it again. I have horrible anxiety and also take clonazapam daily. I drink wine ( too much) every day. I want to stop! I’ve just started some very small amounts of THC due to chronic pain from avascular necrosis

Brief Answer:
Antabuse will cause a reaction

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

If taken in the context of alcohol in the system. The alcohol has to be out of the system totally before stopping it. Even then, the usual course is to take a small amount at first and work up to a full dose over a week. it does NOT get triggered by either clonapin nor cannabis. The consequences of stopping alcohol suddenly are complicated by clonazepam and the Antabuse even if over the counter should NOT be taken by someone on clonazepam without talking to one's doctor. Stopping sedatives suddenly can cause seizures. This is generally preventable by clonazepam BUT, it has to be closely watched.

The standard is if someone has a history of seizures OR SEIZURE PREDISPOSITION to ONLY stop alcohol in the hospital. If someone has NEVER had a seizure. If there alcohol intake is less than sky high and if they have no predisposition to seizures nor other serious health problems, then the alcohol can be stopped BUT generally the clonazepam is increased for a few days and carefully watched.

The majority of the time, this is NOT needed to be done in a hospital but it always has to be done carefully.

I cannot comment on your particular situation.

Regards
