Question: My wife used 5mg Prednisone tablets to treat an inflammatory skin condition caused by the drugs Oxicontin and Xarelto following a full knee replacement late October 2013 and the Prednisone treatment was successful. She now has a similar skin condition even though she has not used Oxicontin or Xarelto for four months. Would you recommend her using 5mg Prednisone tablets for her current outbreak. Your advice would be appreciated. Thank you XXXXXXX

Brief Answer: If it is exactly the same condition, YES Detailed Answer: Hi and thank you so much for this query. I am so sorry to hear about this rash. If it is exactly the same rash, then my thinking s that this was more of a coincidental association rather than a rash caused by either of these drugs. Because the diagnosis was labeled as being caused by these drugs, and even after not being on these drugs for the past 4months she still presents with a similar rash, I will suggest that she gets consulted again. This may be a good window to understand exactly what could be the cause of this rash because it is clearly not either of these drugs that were initially thought to have been. This consultation would be more for diagnostic purposes to get the possible cause of this rash rather than to identify a good treatment for it. Prednisone had shown its efficacy in the past and am certain it would be effective this time around again. However, getting to understand the exact cause of this before treating would make a better idea and help design a preventive strategy. In all, get it diagnosed and a possible cause identified as it would be unlikely to have been caused by the accused medications from the information you have provided. After this, prednisone can still be used because it had shown to be effective treating a similar condition in the past. I hope this helps. I wish you well. Thank you so much for using our services and do feel free to ask for more information and clarification if need be. Dr. Ditah, MD.
