Question : hello. I was just wondering if it is normal that if I don't drink water during the day for my urine to be really dark. I am known to have a little bit of blood in my urine and I'm just noticing that the urine is much darker when I'm not drinking water. I have been to a urologist and about a year ago they checked my bladder with a camera and checked urine for any growth and every test possible and everything was ok. so just wondering if I don't drink water for the day is it normal for urine to be dark like an XXXXXXX color? it sometimes looks darker than this . I went to urgent Care the other day and they said the urine showed dehydration and they did some blood work I have attached what I have

Brief Answer:
It is normal to have dark urine if you do not drink enough water
Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to "Ask a Doctor" service,
I carefully read your query and checked the uploaded reports.
It is normal for a person to have dark urine if he is not drinking enough water. All that you explain sounds to be normal. Urine may get very dark or very light color depending on the amount of water consumed. I did not notice a report of the urinalysis in the uploads but it would be helpful to have it uploaded so I can be sure it is normal.
Blood tests uploaded are normal but a low eosinophil count. In your case, because the rest of the white blood cells are normal there is nothing to worry unless you take alcohol as too much alcohol may cause eosinophils to go down.
To conclude:
- it is normal to have very dark urine if you are not drinking well. A urinalysis report will help confirm that there is nothing abnormal.
- on the other hand, it is recommended to take at least 6-8 glasses of water a day, so I would advise you to drink enough to help your kidney's function and all the body be healthy.
- blood tests are normal but low eosinophils which are low- this is normal unless you use alcohol.
I hope this answers your query.
I remain at your disposal for further medical assistance.

the urine analysis was normal according to the Dr. the day before they took my blood I was at a family function and was drinking alcohol could that be why it's a little low. I don't drink much just a glass of wine here and there and at family parties.

Hello and welcome back,
It is reassuring that your urine test was normal so there is nothing to worry about the color if the urinalysis is normal. Just make sure you do drink enough water daily as this is important for your health in general.
As for the eosinophils, it may be related to drinking or it may not. As long as the rest of the indexes in the blood count are normal there is nothing to worry in this case either.
Only if you drink more than 21 drinks a day (one standard beer, one standard wine are considered a unit, other alcoholic drinks you need to check how they are calculated), you will need to go down and make sure you do not exceed this limit of 21 drinks a week.
I hope this answers your query.

sorry, so my last question is is it normal that when I didn't drink water I really didn't notice my urine so much darker and now all of a sudden it's darker but when I drink the water it's normal. so if I don't drink water and it get dark now is that normal. because like I said I never had this problem before and I didn't drink water because I didn't like it. the only thing was there was always microscopic blood in urine but that has always been there. sorry just trying to understand why now if I don't drink water it's dark

Hello and welcome back,
It is completely normal to have a lighter color urine when you drink enough water and if you don't drink enough water the urine normally gets darker.
So all that you explain is normal.
As for drinking water, it is easier to have frequent small amount of water. Have a bottle of water with you all time and take frequent small sips time after time during the day.
If you start to take more water daily you will start to feel thirst and need to drink more.
If you still do not drink at least 8 glasses of water a day you may purpose other fluids as well such as tea without caffeine, natural fruit juices, soups, milk, etc.
I hope the answers your query and is helpful. I remain at your disposal in case further medical assistance is needed.
