Question: hello, I was put on Clonodine 0.1 a month ago which was an add on with Diltiazam 240 mg, one daily at night. I was having a terrible time sleeping, feeling awful the next day, dizzy light headed and noticed my heart rate was going down into the 40's. I do aerobic excercise as well. I was put on it for hot flashes and taken off hormone replacement. I stopped taking it when I had the problems but my doctor told me to continue it. The last 4 days I have taken only a half a tablet but I'm feeling shaky, dizzy and this morning my heart rate was 38 when woke up. When I stopped before my blood pressure shot up to 160/100. Today it is 137/80. Can I stop this drug now or do I have to continue taking the half tablet? I feel terrible on this stuff and I'm super sensitive to medication. Please advise

Brief Answer:
Change the therapy for high blood pressure.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
I have gone through your query and understood your concern.

From your description, I can deduct that your medications for the treatment of high blood pressure, especially Diltiazem, have a lot of side effects that interrupt your daily routine.

Diltiazem is a calcium channel blocker. It works by relaxing the muscles of your heart and blood vessels.
In your case, taking 240 mg or 120mg, once a day at night, lower too much your heart rate and you feel all the symptoms of bradycardia (feeling shaky, Dizziness or lightheadedness)

If you were my patient, I will suggest you to change Diltiazem with another calcium channel blocker drug ( like Lercanidipine or amlodipine)

Fortunately, nowadays there are many classes of antihypertensives, which lower blood pressure by different means.
So,don"t worry,it is not difficult to find the other antihypertensive drugs, that have not such side effects for you and at the same time ,can help you to have normal blood pressure values.

Hope this is helpful.
Take care.
