There are many causes of scalp burning sensation- please upload images if local changes are present (rash or scalp lesions)
Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to "Ask a Doctor" service,
I carefully read your query.
There are many causes of the burning sensation and soreness on the scalp. It is important to make sure if there is any color change in the area or if any lesion is present (someone will need to check it for you probably). Also, if you have hair loss or patches without hair, this is important information.
If you have any color changes (redness, for instance) in the scalp or you have any visible lesion, it is important that you have a picture of it and upload it for us to better evaluate it. In these cases, a local infection (fungal or bacterial) or local dermatitis or other conditions can be considered.
If you do not have any redness or scalp lesions or hair fall, then this seems to be a very self-limiting thing and the things I would advise you are:
- use an antidandruff shampoo or a shampoo with coal tar- these help with the sensitive scalp.
- if you have to be under the sun, please use a hat to cover your scalp. The sun may burn the scalp, especially if you have very short hair, thin hair or if you have bald areas. In the case of baldness, sunscreen of SPF 30+ is recommended and also wearing a hat.
- try to avoid any chemicals for hair styling. Sometimes, local reaction to chemicals with color and odor may happen
- do not use your nails to scratch your head when you shower but gently massage the scalp with the soft part of the fingertip
- if you are using the same shampoo for some months, you may feel much better by just changing the shampoo (having an antidandruff one or one with coal tar is recommended).
- if there are lesions or redness on the scalp or any skin lesion anywhere else, please be reminded to upload a few images for better evaluation.
I hope this answers your question. I remain at your disposal in case further medical assistance is needed.
