Question : i have a vericose vein on the back of my knee (my orthopedic surgeon diagnosed it as such) which has been present since 2011. its symptoms for the first ~7 years were just a small bump on the back of my leg, which was present since the XXXXXXX horse that sparked the vericose vein. over the past 12-18 months, the vein has gotten signicantly bigger with large bulges on either side of the bump. the bulges are not visible to the naked eye back very apparent to the touch. additionally, the vein has started to ache, especially after exercise.

today i read online about the dangers of dvt associated with %E2%80%9Cdeep%E2%80%9D/non-visible vericose veins. i scheduled an appointment with a vascular surgeon but wont be seen for several more weeks. im wondering if this is cause for immediate concern and if im at high risk for a dvt. please let me know, thank you!

Hello

After going through the medical details provided by you I can understand your concern for your health and your medical issue and I would like to tell you that yes there is always a risk of having a DVT.

It’s important to consult a vascular surgeon personally as definite of treatment is required for correction of varicose vein in the form of ablation therapy which could be either laser ablation or radio frequency ablation.

However if there is some delay in consultation the precautions which you can take for that time includes avoiding standing still for a long duration, keep your self hydrated all times, smoking is strictly prohibited, caffeine containing drinks like coffee should be avoided, get yourself a stockings which will help reduce the symptoms of your problem.

I hope this information will help you and will guide you properly.

Kind Regards

Thanks, Dr. Partap. I regularly drink coffee and have a hard time going without it, and sometimes use chewing tobacco on road trips. I don't think I can stop the coffee but will stop the chewing tobacco. A few other questions:

Am I okay to continue working out?

Do you see a significant risk in waiting 2-3 weeks for my consultation (should I be pressuring the vascular surgeon to see me sooner)? There varicose vein is again not visible on the surface like some of the pictures I see on the internet, but appears to be entirely below the skin.

Thank you again for your help.
