Question : i have had high bottom number of blood pressure for a few years now ranging between lower 80%E2%80%99s to low 100%E2%80%99s and with the top number sometimes getting in the 140%E2%80%99s or so too but not as often as the bottom number in getting high. Now over the last few months i hear a constant heart beat sound in my right ear and i only get peace from not hearing it if i put pressure on the right side of my neck. If i put pressure in the left side of neck it makes the sound intense. Im worried and my family dr has now idea what to do. %F0%9F%A4%A6%E2%80%8D%E2%99%80%EF%B8%8F%F0%9F%A5%BA

Hello!

Welcome back to Ask a Doctor service!

Your symptoms could be related to high diastolic blood pressure values.

But the heart beat sound in the right ear, is not typical. As manual pressure on the carotid arteries (the arteries which lie in the neck and supply the blood to the brain) modifies the sound, it could indicate a possible narrowing of these arteries or a vascular malformation in the brain (possible dural fistula).

For this reason, I would recommend performing a Doppler ultrasound of the carotid arteries and a brain angio-MRI.

It is also important checking thyroid hormone levels, as possible thyroid gland dysfunction can mimic this situation too.

Hope to have been helpful!

Wishing all the best,
