Brief Answer:
Measures explained to help with the local side effects

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to "Ask a Doctor" service,

I carefully read your query and understand your concern.

Mild redness and local skin irritation may happen with podowart and it is normal. If the redness and irritation are pronounced or there is swelling, the patient should stop using the drug.
It is important to make sure you are using the treatment as you should and also that the drug is not expired and it is kept in good condition (it is crucial with these drugs to strictly follow the instructions on their use).

As for the irritation and swelling you are explaining, it needs to be treated as any other skin injury.
- avoid the contact of the chemical (podowart) with the skin- do not use it at the moment
- make sure you gently rinse the area with water (no chemical, no soap or other local detergent or cleanser) to make sure you remove any extra solution that may be remaining in the area
- dry gently with cotton gauze and let the area dry well
- you may apply some vaseline (simple vaseline, without odor or color), thin layer, to keep the skin hydrated.
- wear cotton underwear that does not irritate the skin
- sometimes a local ointment with an antibiotic (or a combination antibiotic+ steroid) may be used twice a day but these may cause local irritation in some patients so one has to be cautious.
- if the irritation is not getting better in 2-3 days or if you notice any worsening of the redness, you will need to see the doctor to rule out any infection that may be complicating the wound.

As for the podowart, you should not use it again without talking with the doctor that prescribed it.

I hope this answers your query. I remain at your disposal in case further medical assistance is needed.

Kind regards,
