Question: if one doesnt brush teeth frequently, can that make someone feel unwell at times? especially with bad taste and a person who has a dental retainer that stays in the mouth all the time? I have health anxiety and take medicine for it. I havent brushed my teeth in about 2 1/2-3 months (but i wasnt really consistent in brushing even before that) last time i brushed was the day i got sick. whenever i get sick then the last thing i wore, ate, etc i dont want to be around it again because I think ill get sick again. when I wake up early in the morning i have kind of a bad tatse in my mouth and just tastes a little nasty to swallow, so i usuallt spit it out ans sometimes feel unwell from it early morning so i gargle.

Brief Answer:
Not likely but theoretically possible.

Detailed Answer:
Hello, I'm Dr. Branch, thanks for using Ask a Doctor. Typically not brushing your teeth for this long would lead to tooth decay, gingivitis, and periodontitis. These would normally only affect your teeth, and not affect the rest of your body. However, if you had an infection in your gums or teeth, this could affect your whole body, and may cause you to feel unwell. Normally you would have significant pain in your mouth from this, but there may be underlying inflammation that is not causing you pain, but is affecting your body.

So in summary, I would say probably not, but it is possible, and it certainly is not healthy for your teeth to not brush your teeth for so long. As you are probably aware, brushing your teeth didn't make you sick, and so I would encourage you to try brushing your teeth again and see if that helps. If you cannot do this, using mouth wash can at least help a little to protect against infection.

I hope that helps, please let me know if you have any questions about that, I would be glad to help in any way I can.
