Question : may I know what is the main cause of prolonged itchy, scratchy throat when you wake up? dry cough sometimes and dry eyes.

Hii. The major causes are allergic pharyngitis,acid reflux. It may be due to chronic pharyngitis secondary to nasal sinus allergy. Sometimes obstructive sleep apnea may also cause prolonged mouth breathing during sleeping which may cause scratchy throat. Dry cough is mainly due to allergic pharyngitis and acid reflux. Prolonged dry cough can be due to lower respiratory tract infections like pneumonia, tuberculosis. If dry eyes are present then it is due to allergic reaction, excessive heat.

Been treated with antihistamine and nasal spray but symptoms won’t go away. Dry eyes, prolonged recurring dry cough and sometimes headache too. In the morning itchy throat.

Hii. Please continue nasal spray fluticasone for long period. You can stop antihistaminic tablet. Take steam inhalation. Start betadine gargle. Start also tab omeprazole before food. Avoid spicy food, excessive tea, coffee. Drink plenty of water. Lead healthy life. Avoid dust, smoke, cold. Change bedsheet, pillow cover twice weekly. Bath after coming from workplace. It will take 2 months to get some effect.

Ok doc. Is prolonged itchy throat and dry cough something to be worried about? It seems that in the morning i have acid in my stomach as well. Can i extend use of nasal spray? Also, how to stop dry eyes?

Hii. You are having allergic pharyngitis and rhinitis. Itching of eyes is due to this allergy. If you have nasal symptoms then you can continue spray for long period. Else you can continue betadine gargle,steam inhalation.You can also continue omeprazole tablet to decrease acid reflux. Drink plenty of water. Sleep after two hours of dinner. You can take antiallergic tablet levocetrizine for few week. Stay away from cold,dust.
