                                            Question : my lower left calf is swollen and painful.  it is not red.  i am concerned that it might be deep vein thrombosis as i have been setting in a airplane for 9 hour

I suggest you get Color doppler studies and D miner test ASAP to confirm Deep Vein Thrombosis.
