Question : my lower left calf is swollen and painful. it is not red. i am concerned that it might be deep vein thrombosis as i have been setting in a airplane for 9 hour

After sitting for 9 hours - You are right. We have to Rule out Deep vein thrombosis first.
I suggest you get Color doppler studies and D miner test ASAP to confirm Deep Vein Thrombosis.
The treatment is injections - heparin analogues which will be prescribed by your doctor after seeing the reports.
