Question : on March 1st I went to the urgent care for a very swollen and red throat. It was predominantly my right tonsil. I was given a ten day course of amox. It took the sting off (that harsh pain when swallowing) but did nothing for my redness or inflammation. Note%E2%80%94no testing for strep done, just diagnosed with pharangytis.

I followed up with a GP and was given a four day course of azithromycin. No testing. Still no progress.

I went back to urgent care and was given 10 days of augmentin and a six day course of steroids.

I took the last steroid today. Still no progress. Red and inflammed, mostly the right tonsil.

This is something that used to happen to me once every year or two before I had kids (so about five years ago)%E2%80%94I never had tonsils removed because I had no insurance at the time. I would go to the ER to get it treated almost every time because of severity. One time, it was an abscess. Every other time it was treated with iv steroids.

I am afraid to go to the ER in light of the current viral outbreak in the US. What do I do :(

Brief Answer:
You should see a specialist ENT

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome in Ask the Doctor

I am sorry for your situation

According to the long time of your symptoms it seems that you already have a chronic tonsillitis which come and goes frequently. This is almost usual situation because you have children who takes common viral situation several times in a year.
However if you say that one side is more red than the other side it means that there is yet inflammation there. I strongly recommend you to discuss with your doctor to refer you to an ENT specialist and to be evaluated further specifically.

Do not take any other antibiotics if you don't have fever because you have already taken several time recently. The point is if you need surgery or not and only ENT can say it exactly.

Just take Ibrufen for the throat pain for some days until you see the specialist

Hope to have been helpful
