Brief Answer:
Due to inflammation in the knee joint.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
Chondromalacia patella is an inflammatory condition and the knee joint effusion is also due to the inflammation.
In case the effusion is a mild one then it can subside with anti inflammatory medicines. Generally physiotherapy for your quadriceps muscle with straight leg raising and knee mobilisation will improve your muscle strength and will decrease the progression of this problem.

Life style modifications like avoiding stairs, squatting, sitting cross legged & cycling will also help in reducing your symptoms. Reducing weight is of prime importance if you are overweight. If the pain is severe, you can take few doses of NSAID's (Ibuprofen) or physiotherapic modalities like IFT to relieve your pain.
In case the effusion is a large one then the fluid in the knee needs to be drained with a needle and local steroid injections help in controlling the inflammation. Your orthopedician can decide the treatment that is best for you after a direct physical examination.
I hope this answers your query.
In case you have additional questions or doubts, you can forward them to me, and I shall be glad to help you out.

Brief Answer:
Joint lubricant supplements can also help.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
I have seen the attached reports.
There are degenerative changes on the patellar side with arthritic changes in the knee joint suggestive of chondromalacia patella. The knee joint effusion is very minimal; and does not need any special treatment. As soon as the inflammation reduces, the fluid will decrease. Anti inflammatory pain killers and regular physiotherapy will help.
Taking joint lubricant supplements with chondroitin or glucosamine sulphate will also help.
Regards.
