Brief Answer:
Recommend a colonoscopy

Detailed Answer:
Hello, I'm Dr. Branch, thanks for using Ask a Doctor. The causes of blood stool are many, including hemorrhoids, anal fissures, colon polyps, and diverticulosis. The most concerning cause, however, is colon cancer, and so especially if you haven't had a colonoscopy in the past couple years, a colonoscopy would be the first test recommended to look at your colon and determine the cause. If it is colon cancer, the sooner you discover it and treat it, the better and easier it is for you, and oftentimes, if it is still very small, a small operation can completely remove it.

Otherwise, a colonoscopy will be very useful in determining the cause of the bleeding and starting the right treatment.

I hope that helps, please let me know if you have any questions about any of that, and I would be glad to discuss it with you further.
