What Does It Mean When You Have Traces Of Blood

There are several possible causes of blood in semen, knowing if you have any symptoms and probably some tests might be needed.
Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to "Ask a Doctor" service,
Blood in semen is not a usual finding and generally needs investigations especially in men over 40 years of age. It might be related to the prostate, the urinary bladder or due to the urethra (the tube that connects the bladder with the outside) and rarely in your age may be due to testicular problems or even trauma.
Knowing the reason why you did the semen examination is important, did you have certain symptoms? Any urinary frequency or burning, any pain, did you notice blood when you peed or when you ejaculated? Any symptoms with ejaculation? Have you had any trauma in the genital area?
Your doctor will need to do a thorough examination and if he judges it necessary he might require more tests and examinations including prostate examination, abdominal ultrasound (to check the kidneys and the bladder), probably retrograde cystoscopy, urinalysis, urine culture, and other tests as needed.
After the results of the examinations the doctor will be able to determine the source of the blood, its clinical importance, and the needed treatment.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Antoneta Zotaj, General & Family Physician
