Question : yesterday mid-day I suddenly had pain in my abdomen. the tissue immediately behind my navel was hard. it felt like there was a small hockey puck inserted in lower abdomen. The pain was pretty intense. I took some ibuprofen and soaked in a warm tub for a while last night. I eventually fell asleep and when I woke up the "hockey puck" was gone and I feel much better. What's up with me? Is it some sort of hernia?

Hi and welcome.
These signs suggests infraumbilical or ventral hernia which is common issue and other diagnoses are less common such as liparocele, lipoma, or intraabdominal tumefactions.
In most cases symptom are intermittent as you had but sometimes it may become incarcerated hernia and this is serious condition which requires urgent surgery.
So we always recommend to have hernia repaired surgically. Usually, these symptoms are enough to confirm diagnosis, but if you want you can do ultrasound or CT scan to confirm it. In future, if you feel such pain again, you need to lay down and push back any swelling if present. If this cant be reduced then se ER immidiately.

I forgot to mention that it seemed like I was burping excessively in the early onset period. I had a soft drink at 4 pm or so, which may case to burp within minutes of drinking it. But it was a few hours later and I was still burping to relieve the discomfort. Does that change your thought? thank you Dr.

It doesn't change the diagnosis of hernia but it excessive burping may aggravate hernia symptoms or it may indicate another type of hernia called hiatal hernia. For it, you should do gastroscopy.
But in every case, I think there is abdominal wall hernia.
