19yr Old, Lesbian. Had Sex With Female Partner. Pelvic Exam Needed?
I am a 19-year-old female (20 this month) and I identify as a lesbian. I was attempting to go to the gynecologist because I was told that once you are sexually active, you should get a pelvic exam. I have only had 1 partner (female) and am not worried about STIs, but I still think it's a good idea for a doctor to check everything out and make sure I'm healthy. I was told that because I'm under 21 and have not had sex with a man, I didn't need an exam. This seems incorrect to me. What do you think?
Hi, Thanks for your question. This is true that all sexually active women should have pelvic examination. The specific test which is required is called Pap smear. The age at which this test is offered or required varies from country to country & you have to enquire about local protocols. This test is not indicated in virgins or in girls with intact hymen. Hope this answers your query. Take care.
Hello Thanks for writing to us. If you are sexually active ( that includes being a lesbian ) - you should have a pelvic exam. It is not just about STis, but for your general well being. A pap smear is also in order. Please visit a gynecologist and have an internal evaluation. All the best !
