8 Weeks Pregnant. Suffering From Depression, Anxiety. Took Three Xanac Tablets. Affect Baby?
Hello, i am currently 8 weeks pregnant and feeling a bit depressed and anxious. I have a history of depression and anxiety (successfully treated in the past) however the drugs i used ( Xanax and Prozac )are either cat.C or D, so unsafe in pregnancy. One night however i felt so panicky and etremely anxious that i took 3 tablets x 0.25mg of Xanax to help me survive the night! I was only 6 weeks pregnant then and i took it only ONCE! However im very worried now about the possible risk i might have exposed my baby to :( Please advise, how likely it is that my baby will have problems now? I feel very bad about what i did :( Thank you Maggie
Hello and welcome to Healthcare Magic. Thanks for your query.
I can understand that you are quite anxious and worried about having taken Xanax tablets during the early part of your pregnancy. Now, Xananx (Alprazolam) is classified as a category D drug in pregnancy, which means that there is positive evidence of human fetal risk based on studies in humans, but potential benefits may warrant use of the drug in pregnant women despite potential risks. However, taking Xanax tablets onlyonce during pregnancy is unlikely to cause any significant risks to the baby's development.
So, don't get worried too much about the incident which happened, but be extremely careful in the future with regard to self-medicating yourself with psychiatric or any other medication during pregnancy. If you are finding it difficult to manage your anxiety / panic symptoms, then please report this to your doctor so that appropriate and safe treatment strategies - in the form of safe medication or psychological therapies can be planned.
Wish you all the best.
