Am I At High Risk Of Rheumatic Valve Issues Considering I Suffered From Strep Throat And Grandmother Had It?

I just saw a cardiologist today and she said that i may suffer from Rheumatic Valve issues due to having strep throat numerous times as a child. My grandmother actually died in her early 50s from a heart valve issue from rheumatic fever. Can I have a higher risk due to her issues?

Hi,

Although you have a family history of rheumatic valve fever, it might increase your risks to have rheumatic fever.

However, the risk of having rheumatic heart valve issue depends on the severity of the strep throat infections you had, how well they were treated and preventive measures.

All the best!
