Anxiety And Depression After Knee Surgery. What Is The Treatment?

Hello Doctor, My father just had a knee surgery and 2 months after the surgery he started worrying immensely about his health. His anxiety was so bad that he went into depression . He started worrying abut everything like diabetes , body pain etc that was purely psychological. He started worrying about death etc as well. He was a very very happy person but he turned into someone who would talk about nothing but his health. So we went to the doctor today who prescribed Olimelt 2.5mg. He said that the effects would kick in after 5 days and that he would be normal after 2 weeks. I would appreciate any feedback/advise from you doctor.

Hello srayna79
Welcome to HCM
Anxiety and depression can occur in any susceptible individual after significant life event like surgery, secondly he is also a diabetic which further increases the risk. So individual usually keep on thinking about each and every negative aspect of life and the stress usually manifest as somatic pains, severe low mood and anxiety. Some people may describe it as part of Adjustment Disorder and Midlife Crisis other will classify it as full blown Depressive Disorder.
Treatment is possible for such disorder and is highly successful. Medicines as SSRI's like Fluoxetine, Sertaline, Escitalopram etc are highly successful in controlling anxiety and depression. Olimelt 2.5 is also a drug to control any aggressive symptoms or psychotic symptoms. Proper sound sleep and warm support is must to hasten recovery. So kindly visit a good psychiatrist and take opinion.
Hope I cleared your doubt.
Take Care
