Any Safe Medicine For Herniated Disc Pain?

I have a herniated disc, C6, in my back and was given Tramadol to alleviate the pain. The pain is now in my upper left shoulder, seems like it's radiating from the bursa? I'm going on a trip and concerned about the pain I'll endure on the flight. What can I do to subside the intense pain?
